European Conference on Children’s Quality of Life

On behalf of the CICADA consortium, you are cordially invited to attend the European Conference of the CICADA Project. The Conference will be held online (via the Zoom platform) on June 1 (Children’s Day) from 10:00 a.m to 4:20 p.m. The program and activities of the Conference will be carried out in English.

CICADA is an acronym for a European project titled “Children’s life quality: participation, recreation and play”. The project is funded by the European Union under the Key Action 2 of Erasmus+ and is coordinated by the University of Cyprus. The partnership of the project consists of organizations from Cyprus, Greece and Portugal: the Commissioner for Children’s Rights (Cyprus), the University of Crete (Greece), the Center for Social Innovation (Cyprus), the Sociedade Promotora de Estabelecimentos de Ensino LDA (Portugal) and the Observatory on School Violence-Pedagogical Institute (Cyprus). CICADA was launched in October 2019 and runs for 24 months. The Conference will be the concluding activity of the project.

CICADA draws on the principles of Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which, in short, posits that children and young people have the right to play rest and participate in cultural and recreational activities. Thus, the project illuminates children’s quality of life and informs policy about existing and emerging good practices, challenges and opportunities across the partner countries.

The project investigated children’s opinions and choices regarding leisure, cultural, artistic and play activities and examined the environmental, educational, social and cultural factors that affect decision-making in general and children’s participation in particularly. Based on these findings, a series of training packages (Curriculum and Open Resource Toolbox) for educators has been developed, consisting of learning material, activities, tools and content (based on the ECVET framework). An online learning platform and a mobile application (to be available soon), augments the training package, utilizing multiple online learning components and interactive tools. All modules are available in English while selected key parts have been translated in Greek and Portuguese. In addition, CICADA has developed a Training and Policy Adaptation Guide in the form of an Interactive eBook (to be available soon) that provides specific guidelines to enable the integration and alignment of the project’s outputs with the mission and the context of key stakeholders and organizations.

The intellectual outputs of the project will be disseminated via the European Conference, having as participants 80 educators of all levels of education. It is envisaged that, the participants in the Conference, as potential promoters and multipliers, will enhance children’s quality of life through their daily practices and will elicit support for the project’s objectives.
